Subject: Church leadership

Question -

Why are elders absent from most Baptist churches? I have been a member just over 3 years and have found only one independent Baptist Church that has elders. Is this not a scriptural requirement?

Answer -

There are two Scriptural offices in a NT church..... bishops and
deacons. (Phil. 1:1).

The bishop - or the pastor.

Three words are used in the NT for this one office: bishop, elder, and pastor. See Titus 1:5 and 7, I Peter 5:1-4, Acts 20:17 and 28. These three words are used interchangeably.... showing that they all refer to the same office.

bishop - episcopos - overseer - DUTY of office
elder - presbuteros - ruler - DIGNITY of office
pastor - poimen - shepherd - DESIGN of office

Baptists usually use the term "pastor" because of the way in which the other terms have been misused.

The NT gives us many examples of churches that had a number of pastors. For example the church at Jerusalem initially had the 12 apostles as bishops..... but Peter was THE pastor. Later, James was THE pastor.
(Acts 1:20, 6:2, 1:15, 15:4, 13.)

Subject: women preachers and pastors.

Question -

I find myself being blessed by the gospel message of various women preachers and pastors. I think what they are doing (preaching the gospel) is commendable, but are they being disobedient to the word of God? Women are instructed not to usurp authority over men, to keep silence in the church, and if they have a question, to ask their husbands at home. Could
you please share with me the wisdom that God has given you concerning this subject? Thank you.

Thanks for writing! People can make Scripture say anything they want it to. I remember when I was in another church that I would read the Bible and come to certain conclusions about what the Word of God said. I would go to the youth pastor and ask him why we believed a certain way if the Bible taught such and such. He would give me his answer but it never really made much sense. I found that it was much easier to just read
the Bible and believe it. (This is why I later became an Independent Baptist.)

Many people say that the verses you are referring to no longer apply. I have even seen a book called, "10 lies the church tells women." They teach that circumstances and times have changed and therefore the Word of God no longer applies to today's society. I believe the simple Word of God. I don't believe we have a right to decide what applies to today
and what doesn't. If the Bible says it, I believe it.

If we take the stand that we can determine which verses apply to today and which one's don't, where do we draw the line? It is dangerous territory to try to pick and choose what parts of the Bible we believe and what parts we do not.

Because the Bible plainly teaches that a woman should not usurp authority over men, keep silence in church, and to ask their husband's at home if they have a question, I believe a woman should not be a preacher or a pastor.

In the requirements for a bishop (pastor), it also says, the husband of one wife. Last I checked, a woman could not be a husband! LOL! As Christ is the head of the church, so is the man the head of the wife. How can a wife be the pastor and authority over her husband?

Women are not less than men, they are just created differently with a different purpose. Eve was not created at the same time as Adam, nor for the same purpose. Eve was created to be a helpmeet. When a woman is in leadership over men, she is no longer being a helpmeet, but the leader. Men naturally have a problem with women in leadership because they are
made that way. It is unnatural and goes against the Creation. Today's society pushes the effeminization of men highly. Women preachers and pastors help blur the line between the sexes. Men have a position, and so do ladies.

Personally, I think women preachers and pastors lose their femininity and are masculine in their dress and appearance.

Women do have a place in leadership. Women can teach children and other women. There are verses that support this. The problem is when the woman begins to think that she is smarter and wiser than men. Eve was beguiled
first, and then Adam sinned.

To answer your question.... I believe women preachers and pastors that teach men are being disobedient to the Word of God. All the wisdom God has given me about this subject can be found in the Word of God and that alone.

Subject: Empty heart

Question -

Hello, when you ask the lord for forgiveness and to come into your life, will you feel it or know it? I have never had any spiritual guidance in my life and I am 30 years old. I have a very empty feeling in my heart and have for many years.I have tried to feel this void with many things. Relationships with men, hobbies, just lots of different things. I know this
emptiness is because I need the lord in my life.I live right and try very hard to be a good person. I have asked the lord for forgiveness and guidance but I still feel so empty. I have heard many people say that you feel something wonderful when you become saved.I just dont feel anyhting. I need help!!! What am I doing wrong? Any thing you could tell me or if
there are any groups for people like me would be greatly
appreciated.Thank you for your time.

Thanks for writing! Have you been going to a church? What is the name of your church? When did you ask the Lord for forgiveness and guidance? Was it a one time thing or something you do all the time?

For a person to be saved, they must acknowledge four things.

First - that we are all sinners. Romans 3:23.

Second - that because of our sins, we deserve hell. Romans 6:23, Rev. 21:8.

Third - that Christ died for all our sins. Romans 5:8

Fourth - that the only way to Heaven is by trusting Christ as our personal saviour and calling on him for salvation. Romans 10:9-10, 13.

Also - salvation is not earned by good works, but it is a gift from God. Ephesians 2:8-9.

If you have truly called out to God in prayer, repented of your sins, and asked him to save you, then you are saved. Sometimes God gives us the good feelings, but sometimes he does not. If you have asked Christ to save you and you meant it - then you are saved, regardless of how you feel. No where in the Bible does God promise that he will give us good
feelings when we accept Him. It is very dangerous to try to seek for feelings because sometimes it is not God's will for us to have those feelings right away and we get involved more in seeking experience instead of seeking God's Word. God left us his Word - the King James Bible - so that we could know about the plan of salvation and his love for us. There
are many people like you who have prayed for salvation, and then wondered if they "did it right" because they did not feel anything. We must remember that we must not go by our feelings, but by God's word. Think about it - if we went by our feelings to find out if something is true or
not - where would we be? Our feelings are deceitful and they change all the time. God's Word does not change. We must trust God's Word - even if the feelings never come. God does not lie.

After salvation, there are some things you can do to help you grow as a Christian.

First - read your Bible every day. It is best to do this first thing
in the morning. Get up early if you can so you will not be interrupted by other family members. A good book to start with is the book of John. Try reading at least one chapter a day.

Second - pray every day. Try to set a time minimum. This will help you from getting lazy and just saying a short prayer. Start with 5 minutes a day and try to work up to an hour a day (if you can!) Prayer is simply talking to God. Start with confessing your sins, then asking for guidance with your life, then praying for the needs and salvation of others. A good book to read is "Prayer" by John R. Rice.

Third - find a good Bible church and go every time the doors are open. It is important to find a church that is based on the Bible - and not on experience. If you send me your city and state I will be glad to look forone I know in your area! (I will just send you their name and address, I will not contact the church or compromise your privacy!) In the church
you can find an area of service to the Lord. Another good idea for you is to memorize some of God's promises about
salvation. A good one is John 3:16. Another is John 1:12. Every time a doubt comes to your mind because you don't feel saved, you can quote
Scripture. (This is a good thing to do when trying to fight sin too!)
